Native Goose is sourced from choice McLaren Vale and Willunga vines, between 45 and 120 years of age, planted to a mixture of rich clay soils and red/ brown loams. A portion is sourced from the estate property at Blewitt Springs, the same block used for the iconic Old Vine Reserve. Moderate rainfalls contribute to a harvest of small berries with a yield of about three tonne per acre. The combination of dry grown viticulture, fertile soils and warm weather concentrates the fruit and makes a deeply flavoured Shiraz wine.

From sacred blocks of old, to very old Blewitt Spring vines, mostly Grenache and Shiraz, with a judicious measure Mourverdre. The hand picked parcels are treated to a traditional course of pumpovers and whole bunches, vinified to dry, batches are pressed, rack and returned to a selection of French and American oak hogsheads for an extended eighteen months maturation. Structured, seamless and lingering, an amazingly well rounded palate of ingratiating alcohol warmth, the whole bunch Grenache contributes a sweetly pungent, spicey lift.

The suave Medoc accord of parcels Merlot, Cabernet Sauvigon and Franc, picked off blocks of estate vines a half century of age, grown to the sacred soils of Blewitt Springs and McLaren Flat. Separately vinified before being pressed into a selection of well seasoned French and American oak barrels for twenty two months, assembled to a style that's evocative of the Cru Bourgeois along the left bank of River Garonne. Currants, closets and cassis, ribena richness and savoury cupboard spice, a sound choice to accompany Gigot or garlic roast of gamey lamb.

Growing happily to deep sandy soils in the premiere precincts of McLaren Flat, the remarkable vines on Wade Block 2 were sourced as cuttings from a distinguished, old site very nearby and replanted to their own roots. The extraordinary quality of Shiraz from Wade Block 2 merits a single vineyard wine, distinctive, articulate and complex. Its gracefully perfumed nose, penetrating palate and showroom tannins, define Wade Block 2 as a profound and evocative expression of McLaren Vale, albeit, uncannily eloquent of the stately Brokenwood style.

Previous vintage claimed Best Red of Show and Best Rhône Red Shiraz/ Grenache at the London International Wine Challenge. 10,000 wines were judged by over 500 judges before conferring this terrific accolade. The 2000 vintage remains a remarkable follow up. The Old Shiraz vines on the Rayner Vineyard are unirrigated, deeply rooted and extensively systemized into clay below the sand. Generally they withstand the toughest of years yielding small amounts of concentrated wines, offering heady aromas and deep complexities.

Make a date with Brokenwood, an evening round the table with a comfort roast of your finest fare, savoured slowly alongside your favourite company and a bottle of the very best. Stylistically true to its McLaren Vale provenance, a seductive, textural accord of Merlot and Cabernet, its chocolatey, cherry ripe fruit character is cossetted by a cradle of supportive oak and length of ripe, sweet tannins. A lovely mellow wine, to accompany home baked, potato topped, steak and kidnie or red wine shepherd's pie.

For many generations, Braydun Hill was a grazing site. Cattle, sheep and angora enriched the soils, preparing the land for viticulture. Tony Bradley-Dunn brought his experience at hand making wines from fruit picked off hedgerows on the English countryside to McLaren Vale, where he planted the Braydun Hill property to vines in 1998. From the inaugural vintage of 2001, Braydun Hill have received overwhelming acclaim for the oustanding quality of Shiraz.

Carol and Tony Dunn established their McLaren Vale homestead to herds of angora goat in the 1990s. Conspicuous trophy victories and industry accolades however, proved unnegotiable at a time when the market for mohair and fine fleece was on the decline. Viticulture was the next port of call, rootstock was sourced from Don Oliver's property, a source of Shiraz for the mighty Penfolds Grange, several hectares were planted and the inaugural harvest arrived in 2001. An elegant fruit forward style to match melted cheese recipes or crumbed cotoletta of lamb.

Tony Dunn learned to make small batch wine from fruit picked off hedgerows on the English countryside. After converting his McLaren Vale grazing property to viticulture in the 1990s, Dunn called upon his bucolic experiences amongst the English country laneways, to craft vintages of superlative limited release Shiraz which have claimed conspicuous national and international wine show accolades. The pick of Braydun Hill crop is reserved for bottling behind the Premium Single Vineyard moniker, a generously proportioned wine of elegance, structure and striking poise.

No estate winery can make the case for synergy between grazing and viticulture as well as Braydun Hill, decorated with significant industry accolades for superlative Shiraz as well as the excellence of their angora wool. The vineyard itself is the quintessence of clean and green, pesticide free and a self sustaining biosphere. Everything is done on a small yield basis, vines are micro managed and the hand picked grapes are all sorted before inclusion. A magnificent collation of old vines fruit from several pickings on the illustrious Rayner property, including a judicious measure of grapes as whole bunches, are treated to a wild indigenous yeast ferment and course of age in barrels of well seasoned French oak. A wonderfully perfumed wine defined by its suppleness and silkyness, there's more of Provence than Blewitt Springs, its endless finish resonating on a length of raspberry, apricots, cherries and spice.

Bondar make wine from a privileged ballot of elite little sites. It's a tiny portfolio with the effort on excellence. At the heart of all their splendour is an illustrious block of less than a hectare, fifty year old vines on a patch of salubrious sandy soils within the princely parcels of Rayner Vineyard. This is Grenache as it should be made, the seasoned old plantings are hand picked for an arcane, old world style of ferment, a measure of whole bunches and whole berries intact, meticulously timed for age and assemblage into an excruciatingly limited release wine.

From the slower ripening blocks at Beresford Estate vineyard in the premier viticultural precincts of Blewitt Springs. A week of vinification in small open top fermenters, hand plunged, rack and returned for optimal extractions, gently basket pressed into a selection of seasoned and new French and American oak hogsheads for a year's maturation. A lifted nose of blackcurrants and violet, raspberries and vanilla, plum fruits, cherry and a sprinkle of milled spice, its fine tannins and fragrant cedar oak bring Beresford to a balanced, savoury finish.

A historical clone of early settler Grenache, crafted to a style of even greater palate weight, velvet in texture and sleek of tannin, leading with its nubile nose of cumin, cloves and fragrant star anise. Bekkers retain the precious harvest from a princely parcel of dry grown fruit, hand picked off an old, unirrigated vineyard just outside McLaren Vale. Essential inclusions of Grenache from a few good rows of vine at Kangarilla, Blewitt Springs and Onkaparinga Hills, contribute a bouquet garni of pretty aromatics and savoury Indian spice.

The Shaws of McLaren Vale established five acres of vine in 1975, with a view to supplying fruit for some of Australia's best known brands. The operation grew until their substantial acquisition of vineyards, some of the oldest plantings in South Australia, attracted the attention of Maglieri maestro John Loxton. Parcels of intensely flavoured grapes, harvested off deep rooted old vines grown to the eminent estate Arthur's Block, are vinified into a powerful rendering of McLaren Vale Shiraz, replete with generous alcohol, ripe tannins and exquisite length.

For a region that's so well renowned for world class Shiraz, McLaren Vale makes extraordinary Cabernet and Ballast Stone are on the receiving end of some serious attention for their quality of wines. Grapes are predominantly sourced from the venerable Arthur's Block, where gnarled old vines continue to deliver harvests of the finest fruit anywhere in McLaren Vale. Enthusiasts of accessible Cabernet wines take note, that nothing beats sitting down to a traditional roast leg of lamb with all the trimmings and a glass or two of well breathed Ballast Stone.

Aramis craft nothing but the finest possible, crafted from the pick of fruit grown to the most splendid sites. All the winemaking is highly traditional and very labour intensive, maturation takes place in a high proportion of new American oak barriques. A deeply ruby purple Shiraz, the nose offers mulberry, blackberries and plum, toasty oak and wafts of fresh mint over layers of dark chocolate. On the palate blueberry, black raspberry and char, wonderful intensity, supple integrated fruit tannins before a long finish, all in fine balance with the soothing alcohol warmth of Gulf St Vincent.

Many of the Aramis estate vines are planted on their original rootstock into some of the world's oldest mineral rich soils, where they enjoy excellent sun exposure and the most temperate of Mediterranean climes. Heat generated during the day is moderated each evening by coastal winds that cool the vines for an extended ripening, encouraging the tannins and stimulating the juicy fruit esters to ripen slowly into full bloom. The final wine is assembled from a selection of the best barrels, those parcels which can best demonstrate an intensity of fruit, balanced by well integrated oak.

Aramis are endowed with over sixty acres of the most propitious vineyards in all McLaren Vale. There's a single elite block of old Shiraz, at the very top of the steeply planted property, invigorated by the balmy maritime breezes of Gulf St Vincent, it yields a spectacular harvest of fruit, defined by its fragrantly spiced cassis opulence, chamois, mocha tannins and textural mineral richness. The Heir is assembled from the best of the best barrels Aramis Shiraz, matured two years in a luxuriously high proportion of new French oak hogsheads, unfiltered and unfined.

The Aramis vineyards are blessed by a close proximity to the southern coast, where daily sea breezes combine with the exacting vineyard management regimens, to deliver small but high quality harvests of intensely flavoured fruit. Berries are always quite small in size, displaying an enhancement of pure varietal characters and splendid concentration of flavour. Redolent of dark barmble fruit characters and fragrant violet cassis bouquets, a selection of the finest oak barrels are employed to mellow and integrate the succulent McLaren Vale Cabernet tannins.

Ray and Patrik Jones first venture into wine culture was a proposal for a film featuring industry savant James Halliday as anchorman. Set near the juncture of Kangarilla and Tatachilla Roads at McLaren Vale, the father and son operation release small amounts of hand made wine. Arakoon are somewhat more elegant and understated, a stylistic objective achieved through extended post ferment maceration and supple new French oak. Sellicks Beach conjures violet and spiced plums over a heady touch of bourbon barrel and creamy, mocha tannins.
